Lisa Johnson

The Artist

LISA JOHNSON

Lisa Johnson has been painting Canadian landscapes for over 20 years. Her work ranges from small oils on wood done on location to large abstracted landscapes done in studio. Johnson’s paintings express the movement and poetry of landscape, weaving geographic, corporeal, and abstract sensibilities through layers of atmospheric grounds and gestural drawing. How geography becomes embedded in the psyche fascinates Johnson. Her landscape abstractions are created through an improvisational process, allowing fragments of experience, memories and emotions to emerge from the subconscious. For Johnson this painting process allows her to create lyrical worlds that speak to the relationship between the artist and the land.

Lisa Johnson graduated with Honours in Drawing and Painting from the Ontario College of Art, where she also won the prestigious award for 4th year women painters. Lisa Johnson has shown widely both in solo and group shows both in Ontario and Manitoba and her work is in hundreds of private and corporate collections in the U.S.A., Europe and Canada. Johnson lives and works just north of Toronto but also has a studio in the dramatic ‘Shield’ country of North Eastern Ontario.
