Lake Winnipeg (the Southern Beaches) is a unique landscape. Lake Winnipeg was formed about 12,000 years ago, the remnants of the vast Lake Agassiz. Beautiful deposits of white sand form beaches between the granite boulders left by the receding glaciers.
Victoria Beach is particularly interesting; at the tip of a peninsula, there are numerous beaches between the rocky points that radiate out from the Boreal forest with Elk Island in the distance. This is a landscape I am very familiar with. I've been visiting in the summer since childhood. A lifelong artist as well, now painting fulltime, I work in an impressionistic style, almost realistic at times.
These paintings are from photographs, taken mostly on my morning walks. Long shadows cross the beach and a nice breeze (waves) - it's a beautiful time to be out. Other paintings in the series are at sunset - Golden Hour or Magic Hour. The massive lake along with the prairie sky is an unbeatable combination. For the impressionists, it's all about the light.
It is my absolute pleasure to be sharing these large oil paintings of a place hold near to my heart. In the best possible light and compositions, I hope will resonate with fellow Lake Winnipeg enthusiasts and hopefully beyond.
