Artist Statement
Reverie is a solo exhibition featuring recent abstract landscape paintings by Lisa Johnson.
Lisa Johnson's practice is rooted in improvisation and memory. Her paintings layer atmospheric grounds and gestural marks to evoke a sense of space that is both geographic and emotional. Through this process, she creates immersive, lyrical landscapes that speak to the relationship between the artist and the land.
Whether in the Shield country of Northern Ontario or along Newfoundland's rocky shores, Johnson is drawn to expansive landscapes with nature at its most raw and elemental.
Lisa Johnson's artistic practice began in dance, where she developed an appreciation for movement as a means of expression, a principle that continues to inform her painting today. Using sweeping brushstrokes and gestural impasto, Johnson explores the tension between form and space; drawing and painting; representation and abstraction. Drawing on the tradition of action painting, her work suggests dramatic landscapes full of energy, emotion and movement.
