DRAWN TOGETHER EXHIBITION PREMIERES AT THE HERITAGE HOME FOR THE ARTS

Margaret Sweatman to visit the exhibition featuring one of her works

KILLARNEY – On Friday, March 5, the Heritage Home for the Arts welcomes local and award-winning artists from the Drawn Together collective to the gallery with the premiere of their exhibition, Afterword: A Book Project.
The exhibition is a visual arts exploration of literary works by women authors from Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The exhibit examines how literary works can be used as a catalyst in the create of visual art, with an intersection of creative motivations between visual and literary arts. Drawn Together, a collective of women artists working in southwestern Manitoba, use vastly different media for their work and come together from a broad range of backgrounds and experiences.
“The group began in Brandon with just two members”, said Jane Ireland, Arts Administrator for the Killarney Turtle Mountain Arts Council and the Heritage Home for the Arts. “This exhibition features the work of a “Group of Seven” from the collective and is a visual tour de force.”
Featuring the work of Katharine Bruce, Amy Buehler, Susana Danyliuk, Anne Fallis, Colleen Granger, Mary Lowe, and Lisa Lysack, the exhibition focuses on the work of seven different authors including Margaret Sweatman.
“We are thrilled that Margaret Sweatman and her partner, Glen Buhr, will be visiting the gallery to view Katharine Bruce’s work in response to her novel, Fox, “said Ireland. “It will be interesting to see her response to Bruce’s uniquely personal reaction to her novel which enters into a world beyond words where art making takes over.”
Other authors chosen by the artists include Candace Savage, Dianne Warren, Carol Shields, Paula Remlinger, Miriam Toews and Margaret Laurence.
“We are women artists responding to women authors in a place often relegated to “the middle of nowhere” - the vastness of the prairie’, said the Drawn Together collective. “Through words, through art making, the exhibition reveals that this place of flat land and huge sky is replete with vibrant life.”
The exhibition opening is from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Friday, March 5 by appointment only. The exhibition runs from March 5 to March 26 at Heritage Home for the Arts, 44 Water Avenue, Killarney. Gallery hours are Tuesday to Saturday, 12 noon to 4:00 pm. - 30 -
