John Statham’s paintings and drawings range from detailed, realistic compositions to radical simplifications intended to distill some aspect of a chosen motif. Statham’s work is consistent in its layering of colour and subtlety of touch, and for the close scrutiny he brings to his subjects – each of which, in his view, harbours expressive and symbolic potential waiting to be uncovered.
Statham was born in Longueuil, Québec and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) from the University of Manitoba in 1975. Following three years of study in England and France, he returned to Winnipeg in 1980 to pursue his art and to work as a simultaneous interpreter and translator in French and English. His works are in private collections in Canada, the U.S.A. and Europe.
