John Statham

ARTIST STATEMENT

Although the images I make originate in what I see and may evoke familiar phenomena, they do not purport to be “realist”. For me there is no absolute boundary between representation and abstraction, and both occur to varying degrees in my work as inner necessity dictates.

Instinct and chance lead me to the raw material of my pictures, but then I must become sufficiently familiar with it to transform it into images that feel authentic to me. I approach my subjects receptively, certain always that within each lie symbolic and expressive possibilities waiting to be uncovered.

No claim as to what my art is “about” would be sincere. At best I can venture that it’s an ongoing, oblique expression of who I am and of my desire to create something beautiful.
